Juvenile prosecution is a specialized unit of prosecutors, victim witness specialists, and investigators committed to a focus on juvenile delinquency prosecution. Juvenile prosecutors seek to balance the best interests of victims and the community, and seek to rehabilitate the prosecuted youth. Prosecuted crimes include, but are not limited to: possession of weapon on school grounds and school threats, sexting, drug use and possession, sexual assaults, burglary, aggravated robbery, aggravated motor vehicle theft, credit card and identity theft, and gang-related crimes.
In Juvenile Delinquency Court, the focus is on rehabilitation rather than punishment. The approach and outcome on these cases varies greatly from what you might see in District Court. Our team is focused on finding appropriate resolutions and interventions that account for the seriousness of the offense, the impact to victims, the risks to the community, and prevention of future criminal behavior. Outcomes from juvenile court can range from a referral to our juvenile diversion counseling program up to charging a juvenile defendant as an adult and seeking the most severe sanctions in district court.
